An autopsy was inconclusive Tuesday into the death Sunday of a Rankin County man who died after deputies used a stun gun on him.

The body of Joseph E. Davis, 50, was to be released to Riles Funeral Home in Vicksburg where Davis had lived before moving to the Jackson area 22 years ago.

Sheriff Ronnie Pennington said the Mississippi Highway Patrol had been asked to investigate the death which came after deputies responded to a woman’s call of attempted rape.

Pennington said the woman reported she fled from Davis after he entered her property in the Barnett Bend subdivision. A fight broke out when two lawmen who went to question Davis a few houses away tried to arrest him, Pennington said.

Pennington said a third deputy arrived to help and one of the officers used the Taser, a brand of weapons that deliver electrical shocks, after another deputy said he felt a tug on his gun.

Davis was pronounced dead at the scene of Sunday’s incident.

Rankin County Coroner Jimmy Roberts said in reports today that the autopsy did not confirm a cause of death for Davis. Pennington said the deputies involved have not been placed on administrative leave.

Pennington said the department has used Tasers for years. The weapons are considered nonlethal.
