ACHIEVEMENTS

Michael “Chase” Nevels has graduated with honors from Gatlinburg-Pittman High School. He is the son of Kimberly Phillips and Michael Nevels and the grandson of Bette Paul Warner, Nell Mendrop, Robert McDaniel Sr., the late Ronnie McDaniel and Patricia Nevels. He will attend Middle Tennessee State University, where he will study anesthesiology.

Teri Vollor, a history teacher at Warren Central High School, has been selected to participate in the annual reading and scoring of the College Board’s Advanced Placement examinations in world history.

DEGREES

Ruby Thomas has received a master of science degree in secondary education with an endorsement in guidance counseling from Alcorn State University. She was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, was recognized by the All-American Scholars Achievement Academy and was named to the National Dean’s List. She is pursuing a doctorate of education degree in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix in Arizona. She is the daughter of Earline Shorter. She and her husband, Franklin Thomas Jr., have five children.

Deborah Lyons has received a master of science degree in secondary education with an endorsement in guidance counseling from Alcorn State University. She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from ASU and a certificate of completion from Raymen’s Bible School at Word of Faith Christian Center. She was named to the National Dean’s List, was recognized as an All-American Scholar by the U.S. Achievement Academy and was a member of Alpha Beta Gamma honor society. She has been accepted to the University of Phoenix, where she will pursue a doctorate in education leadership. She and her husband, Garry Lyons, have two children.

Melinda Morang has graduated with honors from the University of Chicago, where she received a degree in physics. She will begin a physics doctoral program at the University of Michigan in September. A 2004 graduate of Vicksburg High School, she is the daughter of Andrew and Susan Morang.

Justin M. Turner has received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville. He will begin a three-year residency in internal medicine at University Medical Center in Jackson. A 1999 graduate of Warren Central, he is the son of Janice T. and Lt. Walter Armstrong.

Johnathan Ray Kline has received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Millsaps College in Jackson. He is the son of Virgie L. Kline of Vicksburg and Johnny C. Kline of Tallulah.

Kimberly Nicole Washington has received a bachelor of arts degree in early childhood education with a minor in mathematics from Tougaloo College. A dean’s scholar, she was a member of the NAACP and Kappa Delta Pi international honor society. She served as captain of the Tougaloo Dancing Divas and will pursue a master of arts in teaching at Jackson State University in the fall. She is the daughter of Linda Washington and the granddaughter of Minevea Russum and the late Scott J. Russum.

Vicksburg students who received degrees from the University of Mississippi Medical Center during annual commencement exercises at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson were Alexander Eric Fong, son of Mr. and Mrs. See Fong, who received the doctor of medicine degree and will begin residency training in preliminary medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and in neurology at the Baylor College of Medicine; Jennifer Lynne King, daughter of Otto and Cindy King, who received the doctor of dentistry degree; Marla Jean Richardson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Richardson, who received a master of occupational therapy; Marian Cecile Ellis Banks, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel G. Ellis and wife of William H. Banks Jr., who received a master of science in nursing; Kimberly B. IN ATTENDANCE

Sarah Danielle Rusche, Justin Thomas Fisher and Robert Edward Walker, all of Vicksburg, are participating in the Cooperative Education Program at Mississippi State University. The program allows students to affiliate with a business while alternating semesters at MSU to combine practical experience with theoretical training. Rusche, an architect major, is working for Foil-Wyatt Architects & Planners PA in Jackson. Fisher, a civil engineering major, is working with the Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg. Walker, a mechanical engineering major, is working for Cooper Tire & Rubber in Tupelo.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Alyshia Selmon of Vicksburg has received a $2,500 scholarship from the College of Business Foundation at the University of Southern Mississippi. A junior business administration major, she is a member of the Honors College and Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity. She is the daughter of Charles and Fredia Selmon.
