A Vicksburg woman accused of driving drunk and killing an 81-year-old man pleaded guilty Friday, while a Vicksburg man who was expected to do the same in another DUI death had his hearing delayed.
Brandy Wallace, 26, will be sentenced July 24. She pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI in the Nov. 5 death of John E. Parrette, who was run over as he was checking mail at his Roseland Drive home.
Also Friday, Warren County Circuit Judge Isadore Patrick postponed the hearing of Timothy Pee, 21, who had been expected to plead guilty to aggravated DUI in a May 20, 2007, wreck that killed Christopher Rawlings, 27. Rawlings was Pee’s passenger in a GMC Yukon that flipped on Confederate Avenue, near Wisconsin Avenue.
Assistant District Attorney Dewey Arthur said Pee’s hearing was delayed because items regarding the defendant’s plea agreement needed to be finalized. Arthur did not release details. A new hearing date has not been set.
Wallace’s pleas is open, meaning the DA’s office made no plea agreement or recommendation for her sentence. If convicted, Wallace faces five to 25 years in prison; an aggravated DUI conviction requires a minimum 85 percent of the sentence be served.
On the day of Wallace’s wreck, police said, she was northbound that afternoon on Roseland at an unknown speed when her Toyota Tacoma left the street and hit Parrette. He was pronounced dead at the scene; an autopsy showed he died from head trauma. Police said evidence at the scene led them to believe Wallace was intoxicated. She was arrested and charged with the felony offense. At the time, she was driving with a suspended license in a pending DUI case.
Parrette, a retired Waterways Experiment Station civil engineer and technician, was a widow and had two daughters, Rebecca P. Brasfield of Vicksburg and Rachel P. Gray of Jackson. He also had three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In Pee’s wreck, police said, he and Rawlings were westbound on Confederate Avenue when the SUV left the road, flipped and struck a tree. The vehicle came to rest in a thicket along Confederate, just past Rosedown Street. Rawlings died of internal injuries, said an autopsy. Rawlings’ death came two years after sibling Corey Rawlings died in a wreck on Interstate 20. His stepsister, Almeda Rawlings, also died in a wreck.
