Augusta Anderson
Augusta Anderson died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 82.
A homemaker, Mrs. Anderson was a member of Hickory Tree M.B. Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Solomon Sims and Mary Ella Jackson; a daughter, Gloria Anderson; a son, Curtis Lee Anderson; two brothers, Johnnie Sims and Mack Sims; and two sisters, Saforina Ellis and Lanie Coleman.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Ernest Anderson Sr. of Vicksburg; seven sons, Eddie McCoy, Jessie McCoy, Larry Anderson and Michael Anderson, all of Vicksburg, Ernest Anderson Jr. of Winfield, La., Willie Lee Anderson of Portland, Ore., and Tommie Lee Anderson of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Barbara Ware-Hodge of Edwards and Emma Lee Judge of Vicksburg; 65 grandchildren; 116 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, including Loraine Darden, Michael Tolliver, Sheryl Tolliver, Brelyn Gross and Sylvester Bowman, all of Vicksburg.
W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
William J. Barnes
William J. “Wild Bill” Barnes died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at his home. He was 92.
Mr. Barnes was born in Philadelphia, Pa. He had been a resident of Vicksburg for the past 31 years. He was an electrical engineer and supervisor for Bechtel Corporation. He was employed for 37 years with Bechtel. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Local No. 126 in Philadelphia. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge. He was of the Episcopal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Doris W. Barnes of Vicksburg; four sons, Bill Barnes and his wife, Lydia Barnes, of Tulsa; Gary Barnes of Tallulah, Rick Barnes and Mike Barnes, both of Vicksburg; a daughter, Debby Runnels and her husband, Tommy Runnels, of Vicksburg; 16 grandchildren including Nathaniel Barnes, Jennifer Barnes both of Tallulah and David Wheelock and his wife Amber Wheelock of Vicksburg; nine great-grandchildren including Matthew Wheelock and Codey Wheelock both of Vicksburg.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev.’s Claire Biedenharn and Lister Bowdoin officiating. Visitation will be from noon Tuesday until the hour of the service.
Memorials may be made to the Bovina United Methodist Church, 70 Bovina Dr., Vicksburg, MS 39180.
Joseph Kyle Barnett
Joseph Kyle Barnett of Redwood died Friday, July 11, 2008, in a car accident.
He was a dedicated hunter, fisherman, weight-lifter and workaholic. He touched the hearts of all he knew.
He leaves behind four parents, Virginia and Billy Love and Buck and Louanna Barnett; six sisters, Bridgette Parra, Nancy Love, Cynthia Rubio, Angela Ward, Jennifer Richardson and Casey Pettway; and two brothers, Cory Chustz and Billy Love Jr. From the Barnett family he leaves two uncles and two aunts; from the Kackley family, eight uncles and three aunts; and from the Breland family, four uncles.
He was preceded in death by two sets of grandparents, Charles and Virginia Kackley, Mary Belle and Hap Dillon and J.M. Barnett Sr. He will also be greatly missed by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Talbert officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Rowdy Bridges, Tommy Breland, William Breland, Cory Harbor, Christopher Parra and Danny Parra.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jeffery Breland, Paul Breland Jr., Paul Parra, Tommy King, Billy Hearn, Marty Welch, Rodney Porter and Edgar Richardson.
Raymond M. Hackler
EDWARDS – Raymond M. Hackler died Friday, July 11, 2008, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Jackson. He was 89.
Mr. Hackler was a long-time resident of the Utica area. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the VFW and Bethesda Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Hackler; and his parents, Raymond M. and Ethel Crawford Hackler.
Survivors include two sons, Ed Hackler of Crystal Springs and Raymond M. “Mike” Hackler III of Raymond; one sister, Peg H. Nelson of Edwards; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethesda Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Chris Lother officiating. Burial will follow at the Bethesda Cemetery with Glenwood Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the hour of the service at the church.
Woodrow Wilson Nations
FAYETTE – Woodrow Wilson Nations died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at his home. He was 88.
Mr. Nations was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. He was employed by the Mississippi Forestry Commission as a forestry technician for 30 years, retiring in 1985.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emile and Mattie Nations. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn B. Nations of Fayette; a daughter, Rachelle Holder and her husband, Chad, of Horn Lake, Miss.; two brothers, E.G. Nations of Lorman and Wilbur Nations of Vicksburg; four sisters, Helen Wilson of Houston, DeLoyce Ross of Union, Miss., Fay Holmes of Natchez and Mae Shelton of Vicksburg; and two grandchildren, Peyton and Mason Holder, both of Horn Lake.
Services will be at 2 p.m. at Cai Ridge Cemetery in Lorman with the Rev. Matt Alexander officiating. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson and Tuesday at 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Russell Albert Shirk
Services for Russell Albert Shirk will be at 2 p.m. today at Glenwood Funeral Home. Burial will be at McBride Cemetery in Jefferson County.
Mr. Shirk died Friday, July 11, 2008, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. He was 93.
Born in Upham, N.D., Mr. Shirk was reared in Springfield, Ohio, and had been a resident of Vicksburg since 1958. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired cabinetmaker for Magnolia Mobile Homes. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Mr. Shirk was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Jones Shirk; his parents, Albert H. and Pearl O’Dell Shirk; two brothers, Gordon Shirk and Raymond Shirk; and two sisters, Ethel England and Dorothy Lewis.
Survivors include two sons, Calvin R. Shirk of Dayton, Texas, and Earnie H. Shirk of Vicksburg; two daughters, Glenna S. Gammon of Baton Rouge, and Diane S. McCaskill of Vicksburg; one sister, Helen S. Bostick of Springfield, Ohio; and six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Ernie Gammon Jr., Chris Gammon, Jason Shirk, Russell Shirk, Luther “Buster” Tucker and Glenn Tucker.
Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Shady Lawn Nursing Home.
