CRIME & FIRE * By staff reports

Culkin and Bovina volunteer firefighters saved a home and a resident at 2957 Mount Alban Road after battling the blaze for more than two hours early Saturday.

Culkin Assistant Chief Jerry Briggs said two Culkin trucks and one Bovina truck responded to the call at about 3:45 a.m., and had the fire contained in about 20 minutes.

“There was one person in the home sleeping at the time, and our first guys to respond were able to get him out without injuries,” said Briggs, who did not know the name of victim.

He said the fire, the cause of which was not known, apparently started in and was contained to a recreation and gameroom adjoining the home.

Firefighters had the fire extinguished by 6 a.m.

“Our guys did a great job, especially considering many of them were going on little sleep due to a fire in Bovina the night before,” said Briggs, referring to a house fire at 7505 Bovina Cutoff Road, which started around 7:45 p.m. Friday and required three Bovina trucks and a Culkin engine. It was extinguished at about 10:30, and no injuries were reported. “Half of our crew went to volunteer at the medical services tent at the Guns of Vicksburg event later this morning. They really don’t get enough credit for all of their efforts.”
