• Vicksburg students elected as officers of the Hinds Community College Gamma Lambda chapter of Phi Theta Kappa international honor society are Byron Story, vice president of service; and Lydia Nettle, vice president of scholarship.

• Anna Kate Gilmore of Vicksburg has been recognized for logging 250 hours in the American Quarter Horse Association horseback riding program.

Degrees

• Herbert Dasnar Bell III has received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Troy University in Montgomery, Ala. He is the son of Herbert II and Georgia Bell of Montgomery and the grandson of Lois Young Anderson and the late Herbert Bell Sr. of Vicksburg.

Greek organizations

• Kaitlyn Ellis and Hollie Fagan, both of Vicksburg, have been initiated into the Kappa Alpha chapter of Phi Mu sorority at Mississippi State University. Both are graduates of St. Aloysius High School. Ellis is the daughter of Dr. Michael Ellis and Kathryn Ellis; Fagan is the daughter of David Fagan and Hatsie Baltus.

Scholarships

• Amanda M. Smith, a junior elementary education major at the University of Southern Mississippi, has received the Retired Education Personnel of Mississippi Foundation Scholarship. The award is for $500 per semester for two years. A 2006 graduate of Vicksburg High School, she is the daughter of Charles E. and Michele B. Smith.

• National Association of Junior Auxiliaries Inc. is accepting applications for its Graduate Scholarship Program. Applicants must be pursuing graduate-level studies for one year in fields that address the special needs of children and youth — counseling, psychology, mental development, special education, speech pathology, remedial skills, hearing impaired and gifted. Instructions and application forms are available through Feb. 1 at www.najanet.org.
