Fires will be set at four spots in the Vicksburg National Military Park Friday.

The burns near Fort Garrott and Railroad Redoubt on the South Loop and Old Graveyard Road, Thayer’s Approach and Logue’s Meadow on the northern end will cover about 50 acres.

Virginia DuBowy, Natural Resources Program manager, said that the burns are an attempt to maintain landscapes in a historically open manner, reduce the accumulation of hazardous fuels and help control the spread of invasive plant species. The burn will be postponed in case of inclement weather.
