JACKSON — Yazoo City made quick work of Vicksburg, ending a down season for the Missy Gators.

The Lady Indians (16-10) closed out the first quarter on a 16-0 run to go on to beat the Missy Gators 63-40 in the final game of Monday night’s opening round of the Division 3-4A Tournament at Callaway. Yazoo City was one of the four top seeds to win and advance to Thursday night’s semifinals.

The boys tournament starts tonight as the second-seeded Vicksburg Gators face Canton at 5:30 at Callaway.

Vicksburg coach Barbara Hartzog said her team could not survive the poor first quarter where the Missy Gators trailed 22-4 after Yazoo’s strong run.

“The first quarter killed us. We got in a hole and never got out,” Hartzog said. The loss ended Vicksburg’s season at 10-15.

“It was a disappointing season. We need to iron out some wrinkles. We feel we’ve got some young players who can step up. If they do, we can move on,” Hartzog said.

Finishing up her career as a three-year starter for the Missy Gators was forward Kamiko Martin. She played the entire game, registering 12 points, five rebounds, two steals and one block.

Vicksburg had just one lead in the game, on the opening bucket from Donyeah Mayfield. After that, Yazoo started scoring and then scored some more. Up 6-4, they went on a 16-0 run to lead 22-4. They finished the quarter hitting on 10 of 16 shots. In the second, Yazoo cooled off a bit, but their solid team rebounding converted the misses and extended the lead. The only good news for Vicksburg was two 3-pointers by Martin and one by Alexus Stirgus that made it 34-18 at the half.

An 8-0 run to start the third quarter by Yazoo ended any hopes of a comeback by the Missy Gators.

“We were scared of them because we had already beaten them twice and they had gotten closer in the second meeting,” Yazoo City coach Archie Carlyle said. “We’ve improved a lot with our rebounding and tonight, we played pretty good.”

Yazoo City was led by Zahara Williams with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Dominique Walker added 16 points while Kenyatta Epps had 12 points.
