Two teens were expected to be arraigned today on charges they shot and killed a 25-year-old man they may have been attempting to rob early Sunday morning.
Antonio Tevay Turner, a chef and father of two children, was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m., said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey. An autopsy determined he had two gunshot wounds in his back, Huskey said.
Police had been called to Elizabeth Circle subdivision an hour earlier, said Sgt. Sandra Williams. Police believe Turner was in the vehicle when shot, was able to drive about 100 yards and then careened into a brick column of a home at 112 Alcorn Drive in the neighborhood managed by the Vicksburg Housing Authority.
Sunday night, 16-year-old Gemini Porter, 2501 Culkin Road, and 17-year-old Kersey Young, 1115 Adams Lane, were taken into custody by police, said Williams. They remained at the police station as of this morning, said Williams, and will likely be arraigned today.
Turner’s mother, Daphine, remembered her son, who lived at 404 Ashwood, as a role model for his siblings and a devoted father who was well-known and -liked around Vicksburg.
“He was just a really sweet guy. He always had a big, pretty smile on his face,” she said. “He got along with everybody. He was my oldest son, and his younger brother and sister really looked up to him.”
Turner had worked as a chef at Borello’s Restaurant for years, she said, and also cooked at Sun Koon Restaurant part time. He has a son, 4, and a daughter, 2. “Basically, he was always at work, and he spent most of his free time with his kids and girlfriend,” said his mother.
Williams said police were still investigating, but believe the motive was robbery and don’t expect any additional arrests.
Turner’s death was the first homicide in Vicksburg in 2009. Warren County outside Vicksburg has recorded one homicide, the death by stabbing of 50-year-old Shawn Paul Sponholz on Jan. 23. No arrests have been reported in that case.
