St. Aloysius pulls away from Pelahatchie

PELAHATCHIE — When things got dicey Tuesday night, the St. Aloysius Flashes called in their bomb squad to defuse a potentially disastrous situation.

St. Al hit six home runs — including three in the third inning and two by Joseph Brown — to beat a pesky Pelahatchie squad 20-9 in the second game of a doubleheader. St. Al won the first game, 19-0.

Pierson Waring, Sean Weaver, Stephen Evans and Brendan Beesley also went deep for the Flashes (15-2, 8-0 Division 7-1A) in game two. Of their 10 hits, nine went for extra bases, and they also took advantage of 13 walks and five hit batsmen.

“It’s nice. It’s been a while. The last one was in sixth grade,” said Brown, a senior who hit the first home runs of his high school career. “It’s a great time. That’s the first real time we’ve been able to do that because we hit so many line drives.”

After the 19-0 drubbing in game one, St. Al figured to have another romp in the nightcap. Pelahatchie (5-8, 2-7) had other ideas, though.

Andrew Gough hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first as the Chiefs jumped out to a 3-0 lead. St. Al tied it in the top of the second, but back-to-back doubles by Gough and Charles Medders put the Chiefs back in front 6-3. Gough finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

In the third inning, St. Al finally got its offense in gear and started to pull away. Weaver led off with a solo homer over the center field fence, Regan Nosser followed with a walk and Brown tied it again with a mammoth two-run shot to left.

Another walk to Beesley set the stage for Waring, who went deep to left center to give the Flashes an 8-6 lead. Waring had also homered in the first game.

“Our little field ain’t going to hold many balls,” said Pelahatchie coach Shelby Rutland, whose home park barely measures 350 feet to dead center and 300 feet down the lines. A stiff breeze that was blowing out all night didn’t help the Chiefs either.

St. Al added another run in the third, then scored six more in the fourth as Evans hit a two-run homer. Beesley hit a solo shot over the short fence in right field in the fifth inning, then Brown turned in a curtain call with a grand slam in the sixth that made it 20-9.

Pelahatchie kept fighting, scoring twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to stave off the mercy rule, but ultimately couldn’t keep up with the Flashes. Afterward, St. Al coach Clint Wilkerson said he was glad to see it after the one-sided opener.

“Winning 19-0 is great and all. But playing games where you have to get some clutch hits does nothing but help you. And we got some clutch hits,” Wilkerson said.

Evans struck out five, walked none and scattered three hits in a five-inning complete game in the opener. Blake Haygood drove in four runs with a pair of singles and Waring had three RBIs as the Flashes blew the game open with 14 runs in the third inning.
