One man was killed and another was wounded in a shooting early Sunday morning near Anguilla, the Sharkey County Sheriff’s office said today.
Roosevelt Montgomery, 28, 2927 Louise Road, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:14 a.m, from a gunshot wound to the chest, said Sharkey County coroner Angelia Eason.
Shawn Montgomery, age and address unknown, who is Roosevelt Montgomery’s brother, was taken to Sharkey Issaquena Community Hospital and later transferred to University Medical Center in Jackson, Eason said.
A spokesman for UMC could not confirm Shawn Montgomery’s presence at the hospital.
One arrest has been made, Eason said, and another man is being sought.
The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. at Club 14 on Sunflower River Road, east of Anguilla. Eason said the Montgomery brothers were reportedly shooting guns into the air when the two suspects left the club.
The suspect still being sought told Eason at the scene that shooting is common outside the club, and that he fired back in self-defense.
Sharkey County Sheriff Lindsey Adams was not available this morning.
