Good eats and treats are in store for Kids in the Kitchen, a hands-on cooking workshop sponsored by the Warren County Extension Office.

The event is free and will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at the Extension office, 1100-C Grove St.

“This is a great opportunity for kids in Vicksburg,” said Delisa Miller, program instructor.

The workshop for ages 5 to 18 will teach food safety and preparation and how to handle equipment. Participants will also engage in a hand-washing exercise that will demonstrate how germs are spread.

A lunch, dessert and snack will be prepared, and the children will be allowed to eat. The menu will include handmade pizzas and astronaut pudding.

Participants should wear clothes “they don’t mind getting a little dirty,” said Miller.

“Short sleeves should be worn because we don’t want people to get caught in the blender or burned by the stove, and closed-toed shoes are required for kitchen safety reasons — we’ll be using sharp utensils,” she said.

Girls are asked to wear their hair pulled back.

The program is free, but space is limited to 20. If there is enough overflow, a repeat program will be offered.

Kids in the Kitchen is one of four programs that will be conducted throughout the summer through the Extension office. “People should be seeing a lot more of me around Vicksburg with these programs,” Miller said.
