VALLEY PARK (AP) — State wildlife officers have tagged two black bears discovered in the Valley Park area of Issaquena County.

A female bear was found this past week, caught in a trap with a male nearby, said Brad Young, the Black Bear Program coordinator for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. Once the female was down, biologists were able to get the male, and went in for a closer look.

The male was already being tracked, but the batteries in his collar were low. Researchers were able to place a new collar on both him and the female.

The GPS collars will send researchers information right to their computers, Young said, allowing them to track the bears’ daily movements.
