Delmon Robinson’s career at Mississippi State was a short one.

The former Vicksburg High star has asked for and been granted a release from his letter of intent, and will transfer to another school, MSU spokesman Joe Galbraith said on Tuesday.

“Delmon has left the team. He has been granted his release,” Galbraith said.

Attempts to reach Robinson were unsuccessful.

Robinson, a sophomore, must sit out one season if he transfers to another Football Bowl Subdivision school. He can play immediately if he transfers to a Football Championship Subdivision school, or a Division II or Division III school.

Robinson was a four-sport star at VHS, lettering in football, baseball, basketball and track. Football was his best sport, and he signed with Mississippi State in 2008. In high school, Robinson set the Warren County record for career receptions with 103.

His college career got off to a strong start when he caught five passes for 63 yards in a 22-14 loss to Louisiana Tech in the 2008 season opener. Robinson went on to play in 11 of State’s 12 games during a dismal 4-8 season, but the true freshman saw his playing time and production decrease as the year progressed.

Robinson finished the year with just 12 receptions for 125 yards and no touchdowns  — nearly matching the numbers from his debut over the course of 10 games. He still ranked seventh on the team in receptions and fifth in receiving yardage. He also had 138 return yards on 11 combined punts and kickoffs.

Robinson was hobbled by a hamstring injury in spring practice, but was still one of the leading candidates for a starting job as a slot receiver in first-year coach Dan Mullen’s spread offense.

Another receiver, redshirt freshman Terrance Davis, left the team last week and will transfer as well.
