3rd person arrested in assault, robbery of AmeriCorps group

A Vicksburg teen arrested Wednesday on robbery and assault charges is the third person named in an attack on a group Police Chief Walter Armstrong identified this morning as AmeriCorps volunteers living and working in the city.
Joshua Coffee, 17, was arrested at his home at 241 Demby Drive on charges stemming from an attack Aug. 2 at Washington Street and Bowmar Avenue, said Lt. Bobby Stewart.
The two victims were among six AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps members walking from downtown to All Saints’ Episcopal School campus at 2715 Confederate Ave. “after a night on the town,” Armstrong told Port City Kiwanis in their weekly meeting this morning.
Coffee was charged with aggravated assault and two counts of strong-arm robbery after his arrest at 8:38 a.m.
Already charged in the attack were Earnest Atkins, 18, 2934 Park Ave., and a 16-year-old male juvenile.
Coffee was held on $5,000 bond at the Warren County Jail, where Atkins also remained. The juvenile remained at the Warren County Youth Detention Center, Stewart said.
City woman jailed in prescription forgery
A Vicksburg woman was charged with prescription forgery at a local business at 3:38 p.m. Wednesday, police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.
Sarah Payne, 34, 2807 Drummond St., was arrested at Walgreens pharmacy at 3341 Halls Ferry Road.
Payne was being held on $5,000 bond at Issaquena County jail, Stewart said.
Furniture, appliances among missing items
Furniture and household appliances were reported stolen in the city Wednesday, Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.
A wooden China cabinet valued at $250, a set of end tables valued at $150 and a hutch and mirror set valued at $400 were reported taken from a home in the 1500 block of East Ave. at 10:30 a.m.
A GE washer and dryer pair valued at $500, a Roper refrigerator valued at $300 and a GE stove valued at $200 were reported stolen from a vacant house in the 100 block of Lightcap Boulevard at 9:02 p.m.
