Alice Marie Haggan Palmer

Alice Marie Haggan Palmer died Aug. 30, 2009, from cancer at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 72.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was born and raised on her parents’ farm in rural Jefferson County, Miss. Mrs. Palmer graduated from Red Lick High School in 1955. After graduating from high school, she moved to Vicksburg, married and attended nursing school at Kuhn Memorial Hospital, where she earned her degree as a licensed practical nurse. She retired after 35 years of nursing in Vicksburg.

Mrs. Palmer was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Perry C. Palmer; parents, Garrison and Virgie Mae Haggan of Pattison; two brothers, the Rev. Dolton Haggan of Crystal Springs and Alonzo Haggan of Nashville; and four sisters, Audrey Adams of Brandon, Nannie Loyd of Pattison, Ellen Jackson of Jackson and Dorothy Hudson of Vicksburg.

She is survived by one sister, Bessie Harris of Pattison; one daughter, Perri Marie Steed of Jackson, Tenn.; one son, Barney Owens of Vicksburg; four granddaughters, Chasity Eaton of Jackson, Tenn., Jasmine Free and Jeanna Owens, both of Vicksburg, and Jade Owens of Baton Rouge; one grandson, Chad Palmer Steed of Jackson, Tenn. She is also survived by six great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters.

Services for Mrs. Palmer will begin at Fisher Funeral Home Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, from 10 a.m. until noon. Service and burial will be at Unity Baptist Church in Jefferson County following the visitation at 1 p.m. The Rev. Jason Wooley will be officiating.

She had requested that memorials may be made to Unity Cemetery Fund, 2089 Forest Grove Road, Pattison, MS 39144.
