The Backyard Brawl was as wild as advertised.
Millsaps rallied from a 21-point deficit in the second quarter, but Adam Shaffer’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Renard Ellis in the second overtime gave Mississippi College a wild 47-44 win over its archrival.
Millsaps scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to go up 24-3 at halftime. Millsaps quarterback Chris Graves threw three TD passes in the second half, however, to lead the Majors’ comeback. Taylor Russolino tied the game 34-34 with a 47-yard field goal as time expired.
The teams traded touchdowns in the first overtime and Millsaps settled for a 36-yard Russolino field goal in the second. Shaffer then hit Ellis for the game-winning TD moments later.
Shaffer finished the game 26-of-33 passing for 236 yards, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Graves was 16-for-28 for 331 yards, with four TDs and no interceptions. Michael Galatas caught five passes for 98 yards and two scores for Millsaps.
