The municipal court trial of a street preacher charged with public disturbance has been continued, the city prosecutor said Friday.

Micah Bishop, 34, 329 Lakeview Drive, was scheduled to appear in city court Monday morning to face charges of disturbing the peace and failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer.

Witnesses expected to testify in the trial had a scheduling conflict, however, as they were also summoned for the jury pool for the Warren County Grand Jury session that begins Monday, said Bobby Robinson.

A new trial date had not been scheduled, but could be set by mid-week, Robinson said.

Bishop was arrested Oct. 3 during the Old Court House Flea Market while “preaching the Gospel as it’s presented in the Bible,” he said that day. He was charged after police asked him to move across the intersection at Jackson and Monroe streets and he refused, citing his first amendment free-speech rights, he said.

Both charges against Bishop are misdemeanors, which generally have a maximum punishment of less than a year in jail and a fine of $1,000 or less, Robinson said. He would not comment on Bishop’s case specifically.

Municipal court is located inside the Vicksburg Police Department at 820 Veto St.

In Warren County Circuit Court, the sentencing of convicted bank robber Kevin Dale McCain has been set for 9 a.m. Friday, said his attorney, Eugene Perrier.

McCain was found guilty Sept. 15 after a two-day trial. His sentencing has been delayed pending documentation from the Federal Bureau of Prisons as to his possible status as a repeat offender, which could increase his sentence from up to 15 years to life in prison.

No sentencings were recorded in Circuit Court for the week ending Friday.
