A Vicksburg man accused of defrauding an elderly woman in St. Tammany Parish remained in the Warren County Jail this morning on charges of false pretense, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

David Walters, 40, 106 Allendale Drive, was being held without bond pending his initial court appearance, which was expected today.

Walters claimed to be selling the woman a mobile home but instead pocketed the money she gave him, Pace said. “It never was a legitimate sale,” he said.

The case can be prosecuted here because the money was received in Warren County, the sheriff said, but Walters might face additional charges from the St. Tammany Parish sheriff’s office.

“We are also in communication with federal authorities to make them aware of the obvious interstate activity,” he added.

St. Tammany Parish is just north of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain.

Two people treated after wreck on 61

A wreck at U.S. 61 South and Warrenton Road Thursday morning sent two to the emergency room.

William Walker, 72, 711 Belva Road, Tallulah, was turning a 2002 Nissan Frontier pickup onto Warrenton Road from the northbound land of U.S. 61, said Vicksburg officer Burt Ryan.

His vehicle hit a 2003 Toyota Sequoia driven by Belva Reed, 49, 90 N. Farmer St., which was headed south on U.S. 61.

Both were taken to River Region Medical Center, where they were treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.
