JACKSON — Two pitchers and a hard-hitting infielder are the three finalists for the award given to the top college baseball player in Mississippi.

Pitchers Todd McInnis of Southern Miss and Drew Pomeranz of Mississippi and first baseman Connor Powers are finalists for the award to be presented during the May 24 ceremony at Delta State University in Cleveland.

McInnis, a former Northwest Rankin star, has struck out 82 batters in 83 innings for Southern Miss this season. The reigning Conference USA Pitcher of the Year leads the league with a 3.14 ERA.

Pomeranz, a junior left-hander, is 7-1 this season and leads the Southeastern Conference with 121 strikeouts and a 2.15 ERA.

Powers, the only hitter among the finalists, leads the Bulldogs with a .380 batting average and the SEC with 66 RBIs. He has 76 hits and 15 home runs this season, and is fourth on Mississippi State’s career list with 53 homers.

The award, sponsored by Cellular South, is named for former Boston Red Sox great Boo Ferriss. Finalists and the winner are chosen by a panel of major league scouts, college coaches and a media member.
