Rough Sunday for SEC

One Southeastern Conference team punched its ticket to Omaha on Sunday. For the rest of the league, it was a rough day and night.
Vanderbilt and Arkansas were eliminated from their NCAA super regionals by Florida State and Arizona State, respectively, while Alabama was thumped by Clemson 19-5 to even their best-of-three series at a game apiece. Alabama and Clemson play Game 3 at noon today.
Arkansas suffered the toughest loss. The Razorbacks took the top national seed, Arizona State, to extra innings for the second straight night only to lose 7-5. Drew Maggi hit a two-run homer in the top of the 12th inning for Arizona State (52-8), which advanced to the College World Series for the second consecutive season and third time in four years.
Arkansas (43-21) was down to its last strike in the bottom of the ninth when Brett Eibner tied it at 5 with a solo home run to left field.
In Tallahassee, Fla., Florida State survived a last-ditch comeback by Vanderbilt to advance to the CWS for the 20th time with a 7-6 victory.
After Sherman Johnson’s three-run double put Florida State ahead 7-3, Vanderbilt rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth before Mike McGee struck out Joe Loftus to end the Commodores’ bid for their first CWS appearance.
“It stinks,” said Vandy coach Tim Corbin. “Baseball is a cruel sport in the fact that once it ends, you may never see your kids again.”
Alabama had a chance to reach its first CWS since 1999, but was never in Game 2 of its super regional with Clemson. The Tigers scored six runs in the first inning, nine more in the sixth, and went on to force a deciding third game after finishing with 20 hits.
“You just have to forget it and have a short-term memory,” said Alabama starter Adam Morgan, who gave up eight earned runs in less than three innings.
The day wasn’t a total loss for the SEC. Christian Walker hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to lead South Carolina into the College World Series with a 10-9 victory over Coastal Carolina.
South Carolina’s victory assured the SEC of having at least two teams in Omaha, after Florida advanced on Saturday night. South Carolina is on the way to its ninth CWS and first since 2004.
Also Sunday, TCU beat Texas 4-1 to advance to the CWS for the first time and UCLA beat Cal State Fullerton 8-1 to get back there for the first time since 1997.
Oklahoma topped Virginia 10-7 in Game 2 of their super regional, forcing a deciding third game tonight.
