UTICA — Services for Bernice W. McGriggs will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Greater Zion Travelers M.B. Church in Utica. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home of Vicksburg. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2 until 6 p.m. Saturday and at the church Sunday from 2 p.m. until the service.
Mrs. McGriggs died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at Regency Hospital in Jackson. She was 78.
She was a member of Mount Olive M.B. Church in Utica, where she had served as church secretary, a member of the choir and former Sunday school superintendent. She was a member of the Heroines of Jericho, Utica Court No. 394.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam McGriggs Jr.; two sons, Charles McGriggs and Samuel C. McGriggs; her parents, Burnett Watkins and Mintha Redfield; two brothers, Willie Woods and Willie Watkins Brazey; four sisters, Beatrice Davis, Johnnie Mae Drake, Sarah Watkins and Ethel Lee Watkins; one grandson, Leonard Craft; one great-grandson, Marshand Neal; and one great-granddaughter, Shanaa Robinson.
Survivors include four sons, Frank McGriggs, Kelvin McGriggs, Tony McGriggs and Joseph McGriggs, all of Utica; two daughters, Flora Robinson of Chicago and Mintha Neal of Utica; three brothers, Richard Watkins of Albany, La., Joe Willie Watkins of Columbus, S.C., and Booker T. Watkins of Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Lizzie B. Watkins of Houston, Minerva Davis of Jackson and Doris Watkins of Albany; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and other relatives including the Watkins, Drake, Redfield and McGriggs families.
