A Claiborne County jury has found an Alcorn State University student guilty of manslaughter in the killing of a former friend.
The jury returned the verdict Thursday against 22-year-old Eboni Bena White after nearly three hours of deliberation. The trial had begun with jury selection on Tuesday.
Danielle Nicole Newsom, who was 22, was shot to death on the night of Nov. 12 just as Claiborne County deputies arrived at White’s mobile home near the Alcorn campus for a disturbance call, Claiborne Sheriff Frank Davis said at the time.
During the trial, White, 1165 Mississippi 552, told Claiborne County Circuit Court Judge Lamar Pickard that she was afraid for her life when Newsome approached her.
At the time of the killing, witnesses said the two argued days before when White accused Newsom of almost running over White’s son, and that Newsom had gone to White’s home to confront her over the accusation.
Claiborne County Johnny Scott said White told the jury that she remembered pulling the trigger twice. The autopsy found five bullets from a .22-caliber handgun.
Both women were members of the Port Gibson High School class of 2006.
Newsom was described as “lively and upbeat,” the granddaughter of an Alcorn faculty member. White had been a trainer for the Alcorn Braves football team.
Pickard is expected to sentence White after a presentencing report. White could face up to 20 years in prison.
