MENDENHALL — The Vicksburg Gators took their road show to Mendenhall on Tuesday, where Lawrence County played the unwitting role of victim and speed bump.

Mychal Ammons had 15 of his 22 points in the first quarter for the Gators, who scored eight points in the first minute of the game and never trailed in annihilating Lawrence County 89-57 at the Mendenhall Holiday Tournament.

Willie Gibbs hit six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points for Vicksburg (10-3). Kienta Ross had seven points, seven assists and six rebounds, and Dominique Brown had 16 points and six steals off the bench.

Brandon Daniels scored a game-high 24 points for Lawrence County (8-4).

“The kids are starting to trust each other, and when they do that and play defense like we did, they’re hard to beat,” Vicksburg coach Dellie C. Robinson said.

Besides winning a few games, one of Robinson’s goals coming into the tournament was to give his reserves some meaningful playing time. Thanks to the work of the starting five, they had plenty of pressure-free minutes at the end.

Ammons converted a 3-point play, then added a steal and a dunk, and Gibbs hit a 3-pointer to give the Gators an 8-0 lead 59 seconds into the game. They led 11-0 before Lawrence County broke through, and were up 24-11 at the end of the first quarter.

“We tried to play a matchup that I was used to, so I was basically not being selfish, but aggressive,” Ammons said. “I was trying to set the tone for my team.”

Vicksburg scored at least 20 points in every quarter and didn’t allow the Cougars to get closer than 20 points in the second half. When Lawrence County did take advantage of a lull to close within 54-34 midway through the third quarter, Ross passed to Josh Gaskins for a pair of dunks in transition to spark a 7-0 spurt.

“We came out real strong and then we never let up,” Robinson said. “I thought, coming off the Christmas break, we really played well.”
