Under Grove

Vicksburg sewer department laborers work to stabilize a tunnel below Grove at Fourth North Street Tuesday. The crew has been installing steel rods called chairs on the sides of the tunnel. Mesh will be attached to the chairs, and a cement mixture will be sprayed over it to form a hardened screen that keeps bricks on the tunnel’s walls from falling as vehicles drive above on Grove. The brick arch “has got to be 70 or 80 years old,” said Bubba Rainer, the city’s public works director. “Anything made out of brick is a lost art.” Rainer said he expects the job to be complete by the spring. At right from front, Samuel Palmer Jr., Jerrick Neal and Kenneth Williams install chairs.
