A Vicksburg lawyer has been named to the Millsaps College board of trustees.
J. Mack Varner has been the attorney for the Warren County Port Commission for 20 years, and was a community court judge for eight years. He graduated from Millsaps in 1967, and received a law degree in 1970 from the University of Mississippi.
He and his wife, Penny Sanders Varner, also a 1967 Millsaps grad, worked with the Office of Admissions from the mid-1970s through the 1990s to identify and recruit prospective students in the Vicksburg area. They were chairmen of the Parents Council when their daughters were students at the school in the 1990s. The Varners received the Livesay Award in 1996, and in 2007 they participated in the establishment of the John Wesley statue on campus.
Also named to the board was the Rev. William Geoffrey Joyner, senior pastor of Brandon First United Methodist Church and former pastor of Crawford Street United Methodist Church in Vicksburg
