Vollmuth leads USM to victory

Welcoming Missouri State to town has made for an enjoyable weekend for B.A. Vollmuth and his Southern Miss teammates.

Vollmuth homered for the second straight day and finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs as the Golden Eagles routed Missouri State 13-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The 13 runs was a season high for Southern Miss (10-3), which won for the eighth time in nine games at Pete Taylor Park. In the first two games of the three-game series, USM has outscored the Bears 23-7. The finale is set for today at 1 p.m.

Southern Miss collected 12 hits on Saturday. Vollmuth, Kameron Brunty, Tyler Koelling and Chase Fowler all had two apiece and the Golden Eagles scored three runs in each of the second and third innings to pull away.

Todd McInnis (3-1) struck out a season-high eight batters over six innings to earn the victory. The senior also collected his 300th career strikeout and moved into second place on Southern Miss’ all-time list.

Brock Chaffin was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for Missouri State (8-6), and Luke Voit went 2-for-3 with a doubel and three RBIs. The Bears lost for the ninth straight time against USM.
