Unemployment climbs in Warren County, falls across state

Unemployment in Warren County rose a tenth of a percent in February compared to January.
Local unemployment was 11.3 percent for the month compared to 11.2 percent to start the year, according to totals released Wednesday by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. The local labor force was 21,930, up from 21,730 in January. The number of unemployed rose to 2,480 from 2,440. Warren County’s rate is down from a year ago, when it was 12.5 percent.
Unemployment statewide was down in February, to 10.4 percent from 10.7 percent in January. Adjusted for seasonal factors in the workplace, the statewide rate was 10.2 percent.
The national jobless rate, which stood at a revised 9.8 percent in January, fell to 9.5 percent in February.
Sectors in Mississippi that gained jobs in February included the professional and business services and government, MDES said.
Rankin County posted the lowest jobless rate in the state, at 6.6 percent, down from an adjusted 6.9 percent in January. Tunica had the highest, at 20.6 percent, down from an adjusted 21.1 percent in January.
Among area counties, Claiborne’s jobless rate was 16.6 percent in February, down from 16.9 percent in January. Issaquena and Sharkey posted decreases, with Issaquena down half a point to 16.3 percent and Sharkey down a full point, to 13.8 percent.
