Georgia clinches series by drumming Ole Miss

Another series has slipped away from the Ole Miss Rebels.

Kyle Farmer had three hits and scored two runs, and Jonathan Hester went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as Georgia defeated Ole Miss 8-3 Saturday afternoon in Oxford.

The loss, combined with Georgia’s victory in the opener on Friday night, means Ole Miss will have lost its third Southeastern Conference series in four weekends. The Rebels will try to salvage a victory in today’s series finale at 1:30 p.m.

“We didn’t play well in all phases of the game,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “If you don’t play well in this league, you don’t have success. We’ve got to do better on the mound. David (Goforth) had the one inning that got away from him, but he put up some zeros and was able to give us a chance. We’ve got to play better. Losing is like an illness. It makes you feel awful, and we haven’t given the fans a lot to get into the game. We haven’t been able to take advantage of big home crowds and get them into the game.”

Matt Smith hit a two-run homer and Blake Newalu added a solo shot, but Ole Miss (19-13, 4-7 Southeastern Conference) did little else at the plate. It hit into three double plays and only managed four hits by batters other than Smith and Newalu, who had two apiece.

Michael Palazzone didn’t walk a batter in pitching a complete game for Georgia (18-14, 8-3). Goforth allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings for Ole Miss and took the loss.

“We did exactly what the plan was today,” said Georgia coach David Perno. “Michael did an outstanding job again like he’s done all year, and their guy was good but he made a couple mistakes and then we took advantage of their bullpen by continuing to score.”

Memphis 16, USM 8

Memphis’ first victory over Southern Miss was a bit of a fluke. The second was a no-doubter.

T.J. Rich homered twice and drove in six runs to lead the Tigers to a rout of Southern Miss (22-8, 5-3 Conference USA) on Saturday. It was Memphis’ second straight win in the three-game series, after a ninth-inning error gave it a walk-off victory on Friday.

Five Southern Miss pitchers combined to give up a season-high 16 runs and 18 hits. Geoffrey Thomas (6-2) started and only lasted three innings. He gave up nine runs on nine hits, and walked five batters.

Rich finished with four hits for Memphis (19-11, 3-2), and is 8-for-9 in the series. Jacob Wilson went 3-for-5 with a homer, four RBIs and three runs scored. The Tigers scored in every inning except the third and seventh. They did not bat in the ninth.

Kameron Brunty homered and went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored for Southern Miss, and Adam Doleac was 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

Tulane 6, UCF 5

Tulane (20-11, 3-5 C-USA) scratched across single runs in each of the last three innings to beat Central Florida (20-11, 2-6).

Nick Schneeberger had two hits and drove in a run for Tulane, and Jeremy Schaffer hit a solo homer. Former Vicksburg High star Bowen Woodson went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Green Wave.

Vanderbilt 7, Alabama 0

Grayson Garvin pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings to lead top-ranked Vanderbilt (29-3, 9-2) past Alabama (21-12, 7-4) in a battle of SEC division leaders.

Vanderbilt jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings and then rode Garvin’s arm to the win. The left-hander struck out seven, allowed only four hits and walked two to improve his record to 6-1.

Arkansas 4, LSU 3

Arkansas catcher James McCann hit walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night to give Arkansas its second straight win over LSU.

The loss dropped (21-10, 3-8 SEC) into sole possession of last place in the SEC West.
