Arkansas stuns MSU; Ole Miss, USM win

Published 12:32 am Saturday, April 16, 2011

Arkansas is living on the razor’s edge in the Southeastern Conference and, so far at least, it’s a good life.

Kyle Robinson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, and Tim Carver singled in the go-ahead run with two outs as the Razorbacks rallied to beat Mississippi State 6-5 on Friday night.

It’s the third straight Southeastern Conference win for Arkansas in its final at-bat. It won the last two games of last weekend’s series against LSU in walk-off fashion.

The Razorbacks (25-8, 7-6) have won five in a row in SEC play and moved a game behind Alabama for the West Division lead.

The heroics came a little earlier in this one, but it was no less dramatic.

Mississippi State (21-13, 5-8) scored twice in the second inning, then three times in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Wes Thigpen’s two-run single keyed the fourth-inning rally, and he finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

MSU starter Chris Stratton held Arkansas in check for seven innings, but couldn’t hold it. He gave up Robinson’s home run and then a base hit to Dominic Ficociello before he was finally lifted for reliever Daryl Norris. Ficociello moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on Carver’s hit to left field.

Robinson went 3-for-4 with two homers, three RBIs and three runs scord. Carver and Ficociello had two hits apiece.

Ole Miss 3, Kentucky 2

This time around, Ole Miss’ comeback bid resulted in a victory.

Matt Tracy and Will Allen each singled in a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Rebels survived a shaky ninth to beat Kentucky.

Tracy had two hits and Blake Newalu went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored for Ole Miss (21-14, 6-7 SEC), including the go-ahead run on Tracy’s base hit in the eighth. Allen then drove in Matt Smith, who had walked earlier in the inning, to make it 3-1.

Kentucky (17-18, 2-11) mounted a rally in the ninth, but couldn’t finish it off. After reliever Bobby Wahl got the first two outs, he gave up three consecutive singles. The last, by Chad Wright, drove in a run and put runners on first and second. Taylor Black then flied out to left to end it.

It was the second consecutive late-inning rally for the Rebels. On Tuesday they overcame an early 3-0 deficit against Southern Miss, then tied it again after falling behind in extra innings only to lose 8-6 in the 12th.

Southern Miss 11, New Orleans 0

Ashley Graeter’s grand slam highlighted a nine-run fifth inning that propelled Southern Miss (25-8) to a rout of New Orleans (3-30) in the series opener in Hattiesburg.

Graeter, Jared Bales, Isaac Rodriguez and Mark Ellis all had two hits apiece for Southern Miss, which won its third game in a row.

Todd McInnis pitched seven shutout innings, allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out 10.

Alcorn St. 4, JSU 1

Kenny Rowan and Eduardo Gonzales hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the 10th inning to give Alcorn State (13-20, 11-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference) a victory over archrival Jackson State (20-15, 10-6).

Quintavious Drains pitched 9 1/3 innings for Jackson State, while Steve Easter pitched a complete game for Alcorn State. Drains had nine strikeouts and Easter had eight.

South Carolina 3, Vanderbilt 1

Michael Roth allowed one run on three hits in 7 2/3 innings as South Carolina (27-6, 11-2 SEC) defeated top-ranked Vanderbilt (31-4, 10-3) in the opener of their SEC East showdown in Columbia.

Peter Mooney hit a solo homer for South Carolina.
