Joblessness falls locally

Unemployment in Warren County dipped two-tenths of a percent in March, following a similar trend statewide.

Local unemployment was 11.3 percent for the month compared to a revised 11.5 percent in February, according to totals from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. The local labor force was 21,910, down from a revised 21,980 in February. The number of unemployed stood at 2,470, down from 2,530 last month.

Unemployment statewide was 10.2 percent in March, down from a revised 10.6 percent in February. Adjusted for seasonal factors in the workplace, the statewide rate was 10.2 percent, the same as last month’s adjusted rate.

Nationally, the jobless rate was 9.2 percent, down from 9.5 percent last month. Seasonally adjusted, the national rate was 8.8 percent, which the Labor Department reported was a two-year low. Private employers added more than 200,000 jobs for the second straight month, the department said. Adjusted rates fell in 34 states in March, the largest number of states to show a decline since June.

Sectors in Mississippi that gained jobs in February included the leisure and hospitality and trade, transportation and utilities sectors.

Rankin County posted the lowest jobless rate in the state, at 6.6 percent, unchanged for the month. Tunica had the highest, at 19.3 percent, down from an adjusted 20.8 percent in February.

Among area counties, Claiborne’s jobless rate was 15.6 percent in March, down from 16.8 percent in February. Issaquena and Sharkey went in opposite directions, with Issaquena up 2 points to 18.9 percent and Sharkey down 2 points, to 11.9 percent.
