Jaguars land knockout blow on Warren Central

With the power Madison Central has showed this season, the Jaguars don’t need help. Warren Central, however, dug most of its own grave in Game 2 of a Class 6A playoff series Saturday night at Viking Field.
The visiting Jaguars got runners on base via plunkings or errors and that set the table for the big bats to roll. Madison Central, ranked No. 7 nationally by MaxPreps.com, smashed four home runs and a triple to account for 11 of its 14 runs in a 14-1 rout of the Vikings.
Madison Central (28-1) advances to a third-round series next week against the Horn Lake-South Panola series winner. Warren Central ended the season with a 15-15 record.
Viking coach Josh Abraham thanked his seniors for a great effort in molding a team that lost six starters from last year’s team into another playoff contender.
“No words can describe what they’ve done for us, not only for this year, but for three years,” Abraham said. “They set the bar high. All of them — not just the three that started — they all did an equal amount of good things.”
The Vikings just could not hit as well as the Jaguars.
“They hit it really well,” Abraham said of Madison Central. “They are just a good hitting team.”
Viking senior Beau Wallace had a strong finale to go with his strong Game 1 with two hits. The Hinds Community College signee finished the series with four hits.
“It doesn’t matter how big or how fast you are, you have to have heart,” Wallace said. “We had heart. As seniors we showed this team how to play baseball, how to work and how to be good people. I’m going to miss playing for Warren Central and I’m going to miss Coach Abraham. He’s the best coach I’ve had in any sport.”
Madison Central jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Zac Irwin, already an Ole Miss signee as a junior, hit the first of two home runs to spark the Jaguars. He was just as strong on the mound, striking out seven and scattered just two hits, a double to Wallace and a solo home run to Carlos Gonzalez in the fourth inning.
“I saw some good pitches,” Irwin said. “I got a hold of one there in the first inning.”
Irwin said the Jaguars have plenty of motivation after falling to Petal in the 6A championship series last year at Trustmark Park.
“We don’t talk about it that much, but at the same time, we definitely don’t want to come up short again,” Irwin said.
Madison Central coach Gregg Perry, who has led the Jaguars to a pair of state titles, liked how his team responded.
“This team doesn’t get too up or too down,” Perry said. “We definitely have the motivation from last year. We knew tonight it was important to get off to a good start. We wanted to apply some early pressure and we put some runs on the board.”
After Irwin’s first homer, a two-run shot in the first, and a solo home run from Conner Goodspeed in the second, the Jaguars made use of a pair of WC errors to bust the game open. Stanford Parks, who had three hits, singled in one run. That was followed by a three-run homer to left by Brock Hunt that made it 7-0 against WC starter Devon Bell.
Abraham brought in Wallace to the mound in the third inning and he held Madison scoreless until the fifth inning. Gonzalez’ solo shot made it 7-1 after four innings.
The Jaguars got a run back in the fifth off a RBI single from Lee Harbour. Irwin belted his second homer in the sixth, this one off of Wallace, for a 9-1 lead.
Madison tacked on five more runs with Parks’ three-run triple being the final blow.
Parks was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI to pace Madison’s 11-hit attack. Irwin drove in four off his two homers.
