Salvation Army opens help center Triumphant Baptist to give away food Friday, Saturday

The Salvation Army call center opened operations Wednesday at the former Blackburn Motors, 2011 Washington St.

Nonperishable food donated by the Mississippi Food Network and by the community, as well as baby items and cleaning supplies, are packed and ready to be handed out to flood victims.

Flood victims must show proof of residence, picture identification and a Social Security card during the onsite application process with a social worker. Children’s birth certificates must be shown in addition for people seeking baby items.

For people who do not have all of their documents, social workers will work on a case-by-case basis, Salvation Army volunteer Phyllis Renfro said.

The call center is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

North of the area, Triumphant Baptist Church will offer food assistance for Mississippi River flood victims Friday and Saturday.

Assistance will be available from noon until 5 p.m. each day at the Kings Empowerment Center, 224 R. L. Chase Circle.

Proof of residency and photo identification are required for assistance.
