Southern Miss’ McInnis, Berry take top conference honors

HATTIESBURG – After clinching its first Conference USA regular-season baseball title last weekend, Southern Miss continues to reap the rewards of a solid 2011.

Senior right-handed pitcher Todd McInnis, a former Northwest Rankin standout, was chosen the C-USA Pitcher of the Year, while second-year Golden Eagle coach Scott Berry received the Coach of the Year award and six other Golden Eagles were honored by being named to one of the respective postseason all-league teams.

In just his second season at the helm of the Golden Eagles, Berry guided Southern Miss to a share of its first regular season Conference USA title since 2003. Southern Miss has been ranked as high as No. 12 this season, its highest ranking since the end of the 2009 season, when he help the Eagles to the College World Series as Associate Head Coach of Southern Miss. The Eagles won five of their first six C-USA series’ this season and were the only school to post three sweeps in league play. Berry enters the C-USA Championship with a two-year record of 74-39.

McInnis earns the award for the second time, as he also earned the honor in 2009, becoming just the second pitcher to twice take home the award. It is also his third first team selection. The Brandon, Miss. native is fifth in the conference in wins (7) and strikeouts (73), sixth in ERA (2.79) and ninth in innings pitched (80.2).
