Yasmani Grandal belted a go-ahead, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning Saturday night, sending the Carolina Mudcats to a 5-4 victory over the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park.
Bill Rhinehart went 2-for-5 with a double, homer and three RBIs for Carolina. Willie Cabrera tripled in a run and Antoan Richardson went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, but the M-Braves were unable to hold a pair of leads and lost for the eighth time in 12 games.
After taking a 3-1 lead in the third inning when Cabrera delivered his RBI triple and then scored on a ground out, Carolina tied it with two runs in the fifth. Mississippi again took the lead in the bottom of the inning, only to lose it when Grandal went deep in the eighth.
The M-Braves threatened in the bottom of the eighth when Ed Lucas reached on an error. He went to second on a ground out, but Braeden Schlehuber popped out to third to end the inning. Carolina reliever Donnie Joseph then retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his fourth save.
Reliever Tim Gustafson threw two innings of relief to get the victory. He struck out four and spearheaded a strong night by the Mudcats’ bullpen.
Gustafson, Joseph and Justin Freeman did not allow a hit or a run in four combined innings. The only runners they put on base came when Gustafson walked Dan Nelson with two outs in the seventh, and Lucas reached on the error in the eighth.
