River ferry reopens; 2nd pilot still needed

The Kings Point Ferry reopened Sunday evening and is likely to keep 12-hour days throughout the week, Warren County Road Manager Richard Winans said this morning.
Service was limited to private boats starting Wednesday because one of the pilots paid by the county was injured. A second pilot had worked 11 consecutive days before service was stopped, Winans said Friday. The injury was not work-related, he said.
The vessel carries vehicles across the Yazoo Diversion Canal to Kings Point Island, west of mainland Warren County.
In 1997, property owners on the island took the county to court over its operating hours. A resulting order stipulated service for 15 1/2 hours daily. In September, three groups asked the county be found in contempt for violating the order by keeping it in service 12 hours. County officials contend staffing and budget issues have forced them to employ two Coast Guard-certified pilots and offer the service 12 hours daily. The case is before Special Chancery Court Judge Ray H. Montgomery.
Winans expects to re-run advertisements for another pilot this week.
