A Vicksburg man was found not guilty of aggravated assault-domestic violence Tuesday in Warren County Circuit Court following a two-day trial.

Shawn Jones, 38, 2804 Halls Ferry Road, had been accused of hitting his girlfriend in the face and breaking her jaw Feb. 28, 2010.

Jones, the only witness called by defense attorney Jerry Campbell, testified that his girlfriend was high on drugs and began slapping and pushing him, said Tom Setser, assistant district attorney, who prosecuted the case. Jones testified that he tried to push her out of the way and in the effort might have hit her but not in the mouth, Setser said.

The 38-year-old victim did not admit to the drug use in her testimony, Setser said. Other prosecution witnesses were the examining doctor, a neighbor and the investigator, he said.

Jurors, sworn in Monday by presiding Judge M. James Chaney, deliberated for about an hour before returning their verdict, said Setser.

Jones remains in the Warren County Jail awaiting a revocation hearing before Judge Isadore Patrick for technical violations of his probation on an unrelated conviction for forgery, Setser said.
