Rape, burglary suspects in separate county jails

A prosecution request that two cousins facing charges in a “vindictive” rape and burglary be housed in separate facilities has been granted, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said this morning, though he declined to release the location of one of the suspects.

Eddie Lee Harris, 28, 1203 Second North St., charged with both crimes, rape and burglary, is in the Warren County Jail, Pace confirmed.

He refused to give the location, however, of Harris’ cousin Charles Michael Harris, 20, who is charged only with burglary.

Warren County routinely shuffles overflow inmates to Rankin, Issaquena or Madison county facilities. City prisoners are kept in Issaquena when necessary.

After his arrest during the weekend and before his initial court hearing Wednesday, Charles Michael Harris was held in the Issaquena County Jail.

Both men are charged in the Oct. 26 break-in of a Drummond Street home in which a 55-year-old disabled woman was raped and beaten.

“It’s not that unusual that when we have two or more inmates charged in the same case they be kept in separate facilities,” Pace said. “We just do not have a jail that can accommodate inmates being completely separated.”

At a press conference announcing the arrest of the Harrises Tuesday, Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield said investigators hoped the men’s “competing interests” could be used to further the investigation.

Police have been guarded in releasing details, especially in what role they believe Charles Harris played in the attack, and at Wednesday’s hearing, Assistant District Attorney Lane Campbell requested the cousins be held in separate facilities.

Judge Toni Terrett appeared to grant the request, though police Lt. Sandra Williams said, “Once they have their initial hearing, they are in the custody of the sheriff.”

Terrett ordered Eddie Lee Harris held without bond.

She set bond at $50,000 for Charles Harris, but he has a hold placed on him because of an outstanding warrant for his arrest issued by the DA’s office after he failed to appear in Circuit Court for arraignment on a residential burglary charge.

His indictment information remains unavailable, because it legally becomes public only after the suspect’s arraignment in Circuit Court.

The Oct. 26 crimes were reported just before 7 a.m. Police said the woman was home alone when a man forced his way into the residence in the 2200 block of Drummond just before 7 a.m. After she was raped and beaten, the attacker fled with a 32-inch Vizio TV and remote control, police said.

The rapist reportedly told the woman, “This is payback,” and investigators have been working to determine if there is a connection to a previous break-in at the garage of the residence, in which the woman’s husband had surprised an intruder, struggled with him and had his cell phone taken.

In Municipal Court, ADA Campbell called the attack “vindictive” and told Terrett, in asking that no bond be granted, that Eddie Lee Harris “knows where the victim lives.”

Armstrong said a tip from “a concerned citizen” led police to Eddie Lee Harris on Dec. 15, the same day he was charged with three auto burglaries reported in July and August at Grand Station Casino.

Eddie Harris’ bond on the auto burglary charges was set at $60,000, Williams said, but he had not posted a bond and has been in the Warren County Jail since.
