Southern Miss held the Blazers, who counted the game as an exhibition, to only two points for nearly 11 minutes while building a 36-8 advantage.

“I just liked the fact that we have a huge upside,” Southern Miss coach Larry Eustachy said. “This is as unselfish a team as I’ve had in my time here. I really like the potential. That’s what I got out of this game. We’re going to get a lot better.”

The Golden Eagles led 49-19 at halftime.

Jonathan Mills scored 17 points for Southern Miss, which outshot Belhaven 55.7 percent (34 of 61) to 29.5 percent (18 of 61). Torye Pelham added 13 points and Maurice Bolden and Angelo Johnson contributed 12 apiece.

Daryl Arnold paced the Blazers with 14 points. Woodie Howard added 11 points and a team best five rebounds from his guard position.

Southern Miss closes out its three-game homestand Thursday, when it hosts instate foe Alcorn State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Belhaven will host Rust on Thursday night at 7.
