Herbert H. Wilks

Herbert H. Wilks died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at his residence. He was 94.

Born in Vicksburg, Mr. Wilks was the son of Henry George Wilks and Kate Hawkins Wilks. Mr. Wilks served in the Army as a master sergeant in Company C, 135th Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion in World War II.

He retired from the U.S. Government General Services Administration in 1982 and was a member of the I-20 Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margery D. Wilks; and three sisters, Emma Lee Brooks, Margarite Jorgensen and Bernice Dykes.

He is survived by three daughters, Larue Brooks (Richard) of Madison, Rhea Short (Jim) or Paragould, Ark., and Kathy Dunaway (Richard) of Vicksburg; a sister, Katherine Tellez of Miami; a brother, Ben Wilks (Rita) of Cresson, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Carley Jones, Marci Gray, Lanie Brooks, Ashleigh Givens, Marcus Short, Heather Ayers and Rick Dunaway; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Eric Welch and Wade Hammack officiating. Visitation will be tonight from 5 to 7 and Saturday from 9 a.m. to the hour of service at Riles Funeral Home.
