M-Braves get win in 16 innings

The Mississippi Braves put in some serious overtime this weekend.
Ian Gac homered on the first pitch in the top of the 16th inning Sunday, and the M-Braves went on to beat the Jackson Generals 4-3 in the opener of a five-game series in Tennessee.
It’s the second straight game the M-Braves have gone deep into extra innings. They lost to Montgomery in 13 innings Saturday night at Trustmark Park.
This time — largely thanks to Gac — the outcome was a lot better. The first baseman went 4-for-7 with two doubles, the home run and three RBIs. Gac had RBI doubles in the first and sixth innings to help the M-Braves take a 3-0 lead.
Jackson tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Three straight RBI singles by Jesus Sucre, Gabriel Noriega and Daniel Carroll brought in the runs, and the score stayed at 3-3 until Gac’s homer.
Barrett Kleinknecht (1-0), the last of seven pitchers used by the M-Braves, earned the victory. He pitched the last two innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out two.
Eric Campbell pitched the last three innings for Jackson and took the loss. He walked two batters, but the only hit he allowed was Gac’s home run.
Carroll had four hits for the Generals, Joseph Dunigan was 3-for-7 with a double, triple and a run scored, and Noriega had two hits. Phillip Gosselin was 3-for-6 with a double, RBI and two runs scored for the M-Braves.
The teams continue their series tonight at 7:05 p.m. Zeke Spruill (1-0) will pitch for the M-Braves against Jackson’s James Paxton (1-0).
