Warren Central got the big inning it’s been waiting for all season.
But it wasn’t enough to lift the Lady Vikes to a win in Game 1 of their best-of-three second-round series with Southaven.
Southaven rallied with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 5-4 victory on Thursday.
“I thought we played a good ballgame, but we couldn’t just finish it off,” WC coach Dana McGivney said.
Darby Gain took the loss for Warren Central in the circle, giving up three earned runs while striking out two. Alexis Patterson led the Lady Vikes with a single and a double and two RBIs.
The series shifts back to Warren Central (8-14) on Saturday, with the two teams playing Game 2 at 2 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, will follow.
“It’s going to be tough to beat them twice in one day, but we’ve got a chance,” McGivney said. “I feel pretty good about our chances.”
Down 3-0 in the sixth, the Lady Vikes went to work.
Lexi Burleigh walked and Gain singled, with Burleigh scoring later on a passed ball.
Brooke Patterson ripped a RBI single. Next batter Megan McCullough walked and Alexis Patterson blasted a two-RBI single.
Lawren Boolos capped the rally with a RBI single to put WC up 4-3.
But the Lady Chargers (15-9) mounted a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to earn a walkoff victory.
