PEARL — Vicksburg and Warren Central’s track and field teams will get a free day from school Monday because a heavy rain shower caused the postponement of the MHSAA state track and field meet Saturday afternoon at Pearl High School.
MHSAA executive director Don Hinton hoped a storm system would skip over the Pearl track facility as the teams from Classes 2A, 4A and 6A went through the morning scratch meeting and were about to start the meet.
Then the heavy rains came.
Hinton said the state meet will resume Monday at noon.
“We had hoped to get it in today,” Hinton said. “We saw that there was clearing behind the system, but when the rain got here, we just got under one of those big red and orange blobs.”
Vicksburg High’s Terrell Smith had hopes of repeating his Class 6A title in the 200 meters. The Missy Gators’ Keiyana Gaskin was also a threat to win the girls 200 meter race and had shots in the 100 meter dash and the 800 meter relay.
Port Gibson’s boys are a strong shot to repeat as the Class 4A team champs behind sprinter Tommy McCalpin and long jumper Adarrius Barnes.
