Slumping Ole Miss drops another to VU

Ole Miss has picked a bad time to go into a slump.
Tony Kemp went 4-for-5 and scored three runs, Connor Harrell hit a solo home run, and Vanderbilt completed a three-game sweep of Ole Miss with a 6-3 victory Saturday in Nashville.
Ole Miss scored a total of six runs in the series and has lost four in a row overall. The slump dropped the Rebels to the No. 9 seed in the Southeastern Conference Tournament. They’ll face Kentucky in an opening-round game Tuesday in Hoover, Ala., at 9:30 a.m.
“It was a tough weekend,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “We never got it going this weekend. Vanderbilt is really playing well and they made R.J. (Hively) work as much as anyone has all season. After a weekend like this, you have to turn the page heading into the postseason. We have to find ourselves in Hoover.”
Vanderbilt (29-25, 16-14 SEC) is the No. 5 seed in the SEC Tournament and will face Georgia in the fourth and final game of Tuesday’s opening round. Vanderbilt has won eight of its last nine games heading into the tournament, and won its last four SEC series.
Ole Miss (34-22, 14-16) scored first Saturday, when Tanner Mathis was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and later scored on a single by Auston Bousfield.
Kemp scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game, then Harrell led off the second inning with his home run to left field. Riley Reynolds made it 4-1 with a two-run double in the third, and the Commodores never trailed again.
Vanderbilt starter Kevin Ziomek (4-6) pitched the first five innings and notched the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two. Will Clinard got the final out in the ninth inning for his fourth save.
Clinard struck out Will Allen with runners on first and third to end the game. Ole Miss had cut its deficit to 6-3 on a sacrifice fly by Matt Snyder and was threatening for more before Clinard replaced Drew VerHagen and slammed the door.
Bousfield finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI for Ole Miss, and Snyder drove in two runs. Mathis was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
R.J. Hively (5-5) allowed four runs, six hits and two walks in 31⁄3 innings and took the loss. He had five strikeouts.
