Port Gibson throttles Coahoma

PORT GIBSON — In a punt, pass and kick contest, Port Gibson’s Silento Sayles would come up aces.

Sayles passed for three touchdowns, ran for another, had a pair of two-point conversion runs and kicked an extra point. For extra measure, he averaged 39 yards on a pair of punts. It added up to a 39-14 win for Port Gibson over Coahoma County on Thursday night.

Port Gibson improved to 2-0 heading into next week’s home game against rival Jefferson County.

Port Gibson coach Lynn Lang has been watching Sayles, a senior, do his thing for the past four years.

“Versatile athlete,” Lang said. “He can play quarterback, wide receiver, running back, safety or corner. Of course, it’s another tempo when he’s in there.”

Sayles did most of his damage in the first quarter. He directed three scoring drives while the Blue Waves’ defense added a safety and a pick-six to race to a 32-0 lead. Sayles might have sat out the rest of the game had Coahoma (0-2) not scored off a pick-six of its own when LeDarius Brown returned an Arthur Turner pass 60 yards for a third quarter TD.

Off the bench came Sayles, who tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Arnaches Turner on the last play of the third quarter. Sayles kicked the PAT to make it 39-7 and most of the partisan Blue Wave crowd went home.

Sayles completed 8 of 11 passes for 125 yards and three TDs. He had passes of 22 and 31 yards to Joshua Young in the first quarter. He also had 42 yards rushing, including a 28-yard TD run.

“I figured when they scored off that interception I would have to go back, do my job and get us another score,” Sayles said.

Sayles was without one of his key weapons. Tommy McCaplin, one of the nation’s top junior sprinters, sat out with a concussion suffered in last week’s 40-12 romp over Hollandale Simmons.

“With Tommy and Arthur (Turner) we have a lot of speed, but tonight we tried to mix in a little more power,” Sayles said.

Lang was not that happy with his offense. When someone other than Sayles ran it, the Blue Waves struggled.

“We had a big early lead and I got to play my young quarterback all of the second quarter,” Lang said of backup Jakeem Gibson. “But, I was unimpressed with us tonight. The biggest thing was not finishing. We need to finish the play through the whistle.”

The Port Gibson defense was dominant early but gave up two long runs in the fourth quarter. They got a safety when a holding penalty was called in the end zone on the game’s third play from scrimmage. They also forced two fumbles and Michael Vessel returned a Coahoma pass 35 yards for a score to make it 32-0 with 2:28 left in the first quarter.

Down 39-7, the Red Panthers struck back in the fourth quarter when Brown hit Christopher Thompson on a 6-yard TD pass with 7:54 to play. The Red Panthers added a safety when a Blue Wave snap was bobbled in the end zone with 6:02 to play.

Coahoma was held to minus-19 yards rushing in the first half but two long runs by Christopher Banks gave them a final total of 78 yards for the game. Banks finished with 76 yards on eight carries.
