A couple of weeks before they play their first division game against each other, Vicksburg High and Warren Central will get a chance to do some scouting.
The Warren County rivals will meet in the final game of Saturday’s Lady Vikes Invitational tournament at Warren Central, at 4:30 p.m. The four-team, round robin tournament begins at 9 a.m. and also includes Yazoo City and Hazlehurst.
Warren Central coach Dana McGivney said playing three games in one day will give her team some needed experience, but downplayed the benefits of getting an advance look at a division opponent.
“Next week is our first week of district, so we want to have a few games under our belt before that starts,” McGivney said. “For us, you never know from one day to the next. We just hope we get better every game. We’re just going to go play and see what happens.”
Warren Central and Vicksburg have both gotten off to strong starts this season.
WC improved its record to 5-1 by beating Franklin County on Thursday, 7-5.
Katie Channell went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Karley Hinson had two hits and two RBIs, and Lexi Burleigh delivered a pair of singles.
Vicksburg is 4-0 after beating Jim Hill on Tuesday.
The Lady Vikes and Missy Gators will play their first division game against each other Sept. 6 at WC’s Lucy Young Field. The rematch is Sept. 25 at Halls Ferry Park.
“We’ve already played Yazoo City and they’re not as strong as they’ve been in the past. Hazlehurst is always going to have speed. We should find out what we’re made of this weekend,” Vicksburg coach Michelle Fisackerly said. “We had some (defensive) situations the other day against Yazoo City that we had never gotten out of, but we got out of those and I’m very proud of that.”
