Warren Central capped a 3-0 day with a 3-0 win over rival Vicksburg in the Lady Vikes Invitational championship game Saturday afternoon at Lucy Young Field.
The Lady Vikes got a flawless game from their defense and timely hitting from the combination of Karley Hinson and Alexis Patterson. The pair were instrumental in the game’s only runs as Warren Central improved to 8-1 on the season.
Patterson had a RBI double to drive in Hinson, who was on second after a double of her own in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Patterson had a single and scored off a two-out hit by Darby Gain. Mallory Ashley followed with a single to score Gainto account for the scoring.
For Patterson, the tournament title was a fitting end to a big week. On Thursday, she was named to the Mississippi Association of Coaches slow-pitch All-Star game in June. She also had two out-of-the park home runs this week.
Despite the loss, Vicksburg played well. The Missy Gators (8-1) were sharp defensively, but were limited to just three hits on offense. Grace Bufkin and Faith Thomas each had a double while Morgan Callender had a sixth-inning single.
VHS coach Michelle Fisackerly said the three-run difference was big change from last year.
“We played them three times last year and they run-ruled us every time,” Fisackerly said. “Today, the only difference was the one inning where they outhit us. We played really good defense again today. Overall, it was a good day for us.”
WC opened the tourney with a 7-1 win over Hazlehurst. Brooke Patterson and Gain each had a hit and a run scored. Hinson had a key RBI hit to highlight a five-run fifth inning that made it 6-1. The Lady Vikes also blew out Yazoo City 20-1.
Vicksburg defeated Hazlehurst 6-5 as Kori Screws knocked in Callender with the winning run in the sixth inning. Briana Knox had a double. Vicksburg beat Yazoo City 11-6 as Kortni Newman drove in three runs off two hits. Faith Thomas and Paige Bowser each had a hit and scored two runs.
