Tropical Storm Isaac’s arrival shuffles local schedule

The rain from Tropical Storm Isaac hasn’t washed out Friday’s high school football schedule — yet — but is playing havoc with other sports.
Lum Wright Jr., associate superintendent for the Vicksburg Warren School District, said Monday that one volleyball game, two softball games and a swim meet at City Pool, all scheduled for Thursday and involving Vicksburg High and Warren Central, have been postponed.
Wright said tonight’s softball and volleyball games will go on as scheduled. Vicksburg’s slow-pitch softball team is scheduled to host Forest Hill at 6 p.m., and Warren Central will host Madison Central at 6:15. In volleyball, WC will play at Madison Central.
On Thursday, WC’s softball team was to host Greenville-Weston and Vicksburg was to play at Clinton. The postponed volleyball game is Murrah at Warren Central.
The Red Carpet Swim Classic at City Pool, which featured Warren Central, Vicksburg, St. Aloysius and Brandon, is also postponed. No make-up date has been set.
Wright said a decision about Friday’s football games likely won’t be made until at least Thursday, when storm damage and school cancellations can be assessed. Isaac is forecast to make landfall in south Louisiana today, then plod through the lower Mississippi River valley and dump heavy rain on the region until at least Friday.
Warren Central is scheduled to host Hattiesburg on Friday night, and Vicksburg plays at Memorial Stadium against Richwood, La.
“If we’re not in school, we won’t have anybody coming in. If it’s too dangerous to move the kids, it’s too dangerous for a ballgame,” Wright said.
Warren County’s other high schools were also in a wait-and-see mode for football.
St. Aloysius’ home game against Hinds AHS is still on, as is Porters Chapel Academy’s home opener against Ben’s Ford.
Like Wright, Porters Chapel Academy football coach Wade Patrick said he would wait until Thursday to decide whether to postpone his team’s game against Ben’s Ford. A junior high game between the teams scheduled for Thursday in Bogalusa, La., has been postponed until Sept. 27.
“Since they’re traveling, we’ll do whatever’s in the best interest for them,” Patrick said.
Other area sports teams have already canceled or postponed games.
Hinds Community College nixed tonight’s men’s and women’s home soccer matches against Pearl River. Hinds’ football season opener against Mississippi Delta on Thursday was postponed to Saturday, with a time and place to be announced.
The Mississippi Braves also canceled tonight’s home finale against Pensacola at Trustmark Park. It will not be made up.
