Saturday night lightsField and travel considerations play role in moving games to Saturday

When the winds and heavy rains of Tropical Storm Isaac hit Warren County Wednesday, the decision was a simple one to move Friday’s home games to Saturday.

Vicksburg’s home opener against Richwood (Monroe, La.) was moved to Richwood and its turf surface Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The condition of Memorial Stadium’s turf was the key issue. The field sits in a bowl and doesn’t drain well.

“Derrick Reed (Vicksburg principal), Coach (Tavares) Johnson and I met and we decided to move it to a turf field, because it’d a better situation,” Vicksburg Warren School District athletic director Lum Wright Jr. said. “We also understand that Louisiana would not allow us to move that game to Monday.”

While the road trip is unexpected, Johnson’s team is ready despite only two days of practice. Coming off a bye week, the Gators (0-1) won’t be facing as big a disadvantage as if they were coming off a game week.

“We’ve got our scheme, our base system and we’re just going to have to make our blocking adjustments in-game,” Johnson said. “We’re not going to use this as an excuse. We’ve got our gameplan and we’ve got to go there and do it. In Cleveland, we had a similar situation (at Cleveland East Side) and our team did really well. I’m looking for the same results here.”

Warren Central’s game against Hattiesburg was moved to Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The game will still be played at Viking Stadium, which has a high crown and handles heavy rain well.

“Warren Central’s field does a better job of draining than Vicksburg’s and we took that into consideration,” Wright said.

WC coach Josh Morgan’s practice plan was to get as much as he could pack into two days of work, expecting the worst with Isaac’s passage.

“The bottom line is we’ve gotten two days of

preparation and we’re going to have to handle it in a manner that gives us the best chance to win,” Morgan said. “Our guys are going have to handle this situation in a mature manner. As coaches, we’re going to have to coach on the run. We’re glad to get the chance to play and love the opportunity to play Hattiesburg.”

Other games moved include St. Aloysius and Hinds AHS, which was moved to Oct. 19 and Porters Chapel, which was scheduled to play Ben’s Ford at home Friday.

No makeup date has been scheduled.

Port Gibson (2-0) moved its home game against Jefferson County, scheduled for tonight, to Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
