In a match that had several long volleys, Warren Central’s De’Una Myers had seen enough.
Myers made an overhand kill to end Tuesday’s match with rival Vicksburg 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-15).
The win was the Lady Vikes’ second over the fledging Vicksburg program in its first full season. Myers is one of the WC players who picked up the game for the first time last year.
“I got a lot of good training from the varsity last year and that’s improved my game,” said Myers, a junior striker. “This was pretty much my best match. I was trying to get it over with and that’s why I went for that last spike.”
Vicksburg staved off one match point on a violation against Warren Central. Myers went for her spike about five feet from the net and dumped in between the Missy Gators’ front and back lines.
Myers was the dominant force in the final set, scoring 10 of her 14 points. She served up six aces to go with two kills and a dig point. For the match, she had eight aces and three kills.
Hannah Gore, another WC junior, was strong with the serve in the first set with back-to-back aces to put Warren Central (9-6, 5-3 Region 2-6A) up a set. She finished with nine points with six coming via the ace.
“I did pretty good with my serves, but even when they were good, my teammates were there to make it work,” Gore said. “For me, it’s all about my teammates.”
Warren Central coach Greg Head said the win will help the Lady Vikes get prepared for Thursday’s clash with volleyball power Northwest Rankin.
“We’ve been working hard on our second and third hits because we expect a lot of long rallies when we play Northwest Rankin,” Head said. “Today, our serve reception was good and we were good on our serves.”
Vicksburg coach Charity Gomez said her team has continued to improve despite the loss.
“We’ve gotten better overall, but what I wanted to see today was better ball control,” Gomez said. “When we can put a ball to a certain spot, it makes for a better game flow. We were excellent with that tonight. We’re starting to get into long rallies. We just have to take that next step and that’s to score off them.”
The second set was the most competitive of the match. After a kill by Vicksburg’s Breianna Foster, the set was tied at 17. A service error gave WC the lead and the ball. Brooke Kistler then reeled off three straight points to push the Lady Vikes’ lead to 21-17.
Another point by Foster, who led Vicksburg with 10 points, made it 21-19. A kill by Myers followed by an ace from McKayla Waters put WC within set point. Waters got it on a dig for a 2-0 set lead.
Warren Central got 13 points from Taylor Willis onsix kills and six aces. Kistler had 12 points, including four kills.
Vicksburg got seven points from Jessica Sanders.
